- Favorite Books:
- Harry Potter, The Giver, Shakespeare’s works, and lots more… (I can’t read Tamil well enough to read a novel, but I am hoping to someday be able to do that!)
- Favorite Free Time Activities:
-Singing – I started learning Carnatic music when I was about 8 years old. By chance, I auditioned and got the privilege to sing with Dr. P. Susheela when she came to Atlanta, GA in 2002. Ever since, I have also been performing light music. I am currently in a music troop called Sa-Ri-Ga-Me (please visit www.sarigame.com for more details). Recently, I have also started voice lessons in Western classical music.
- Listening to music – Music is the ultimate cure for anything. I especially love listening to music when things get a little too stressful in college. I like listening to different types of music, no particular favorite. In Tamil, my favorites are old songs (i.e. Kannadassan songs with M.S. Viswanathan’s music – WOW, what a combo!). It’s just like listening to poetry. I also enjoy today’s music, fast-paced as well as melodious songs. My favorite bands are Switchfoot, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Finger Eleven, etc. I have recently been listening to country music – it’s really not as bad as some people make it out to be!
- Recording Merina programs – I like it because there is music involved. Merina gives me a chance to express my thoughts about the songs I listen to. Best of all, preparing the programs helps me learn more and more Tamil. Another thing I like is that the D.J.’s are not limited to any particular list of program. It is a family where we are encouraged to try new programs. Hats off to Rani and Poorna for bringing us a sense of home away from home!
-Watching television – I love watching movies, Tamil as well as English.
- Giving back to the community:
- I founded the National Association of Serving Hands (NASH), inaugurated with the sole aim of improving the community. NASH and Sa-Ri-Ga-Me has joined hands and raised $ 1000.00, donated to Bala Mandhir (an orphanage in Madurai) and to Arattai Arangam.
- Plans for the future:
- Finish Undergrad at Georgia Tech, work for a few years, and then get an MBA degree
